Where I Dwell
We’re heading North for our latest natter with a native, who’s giving us the lowdown on beautiful Braunton and beyond…
With half-term upon us and spring not too far behind [yay!], we thought you might fancy getting familiar with another of Devon’s most gorgeous spots.
This time, the coastal village of Braunton - and who better to share the love than local dweller Charlotte, who works for Braunton-based brand Dryrobe®️?
A Devon girl through and through (although she does, ahem, confess to putting her cream on top), Charlotte has lived in Braunton with her husband, children and mischievous Cavapoo for the past twelve years, with no intention of going anywhere soon.
And why would she? A thriving village, great shops and some of Britain’s best beaches on the doorstep; what’s not to love?
Aside from helping keep the nation, well, Dry and Robed, Charlotte also happens to have a super-creative side-hustle designing nature-inspired jewellery. From anklets, to bracelets and necklaces made from fresh-water pearls and semi-precious beads, you can also check out her lovely brand Ickle Dots, showcasing her array of colourful ditsy polymer clay and sterling silver stud earrings.
Deets below, because we know you’ll want to take a look, but for now, it’s over to Charlotte!
Favourite place to blow away the cobwebs…
Nothing clears the head like a walk along Saunton Beach. We have an annual parking pass, so we make the most of it year-round. With my Cavapoo in tow, coffee in one hand, ball in the other, I’m off, come rain or shine, the sea air always does the trick.
Bonus points for the dog-friendly access all year and the picture-perfect beach huts in the summer.
The place I like to head for coffee…
I love great coffee, and while Braunton has plenty of super spots, Arti’s Too is my latest find. A charming farm shop and cafe, located on a quiet Barnstaple street, it serves the perfect cup alongside homemade cakes. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, it’s well worth a visit.
I also need to give a shout out to Rupert’s Bakehouse at Chivenor, the pastries are incredible, freshly made every day and so unique. I recently had the Cinnamon Social…I’m in awe of this baker. 10/10.
My go-to for gifts is…
Braunton is brimming with wonderful, independent shops to find the perfect gift. Kittiwakes is an absolute favourite of mine, this delightful shop has a beautiful selection of homeware items that always make for a thoughtful present. If I’m looking for something extra special, Wanderlust Life is the place for stunning jewellery; and for cards and gifts (and the ever adorable Jellycats!), Caen Cards always delivers.
For a restorative night away, my favourite place to retreat to is…
Without venturing too far from home, Saunton Sands Hotel is my go to for a relaxing getaway. The hotel perfectly blends a homely atmosphere with opulent touches, and the views over Saunton Beach are quite something. It’s a stones throw from my doorstep, which makes it super convenient, and the hotel's spa facility is an added bonus for a little self-care.
When I want to treat myself, I…
…venture to Bambu Bar in the village, enjoying their signature Passionfruit Martini. They’re utterly divine, a real indulgence, very much a special occasion drink that I definitely don’t make at home (for good reason!). If you’re in the area, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and catch up with friends. Their food menu is rather good too, I rate the mussels.
Favourite beach…
Woolacombe, without doubt. Stretches of golden sand, great surf and space to escape the crowds if you walk a little further. Marine Drive is the easiest place to park and if you’re a National Trust member, it’s free! The Porthole cafe is a must-stop for a refuel; coffee, booze, pasties, or ice cream.
A local place to try…
For a peaceful, nature filled experience, the Heddon’s Mouth Circular walk is for everyone. It’s a perfect mix of peaceful woodland and dramatic coastal views. Starting from the National Trust car park, you’ll make your way over beautiful stone bridges, past the gushing Heddon River, and be overloaded by the sounds of nature.
Both routes lead you to the tranquil Heddon’s Mouth Beach, where you can unwind by the crashing waves and have fun building pebble towers and clambering over the giant boulders. Afterwards, we reward ourselves at the Hunters Inn for a well earned treat, maybe a hot chocolate or a hearty roast.
Coast or moor?
Tough choice, But I’m going for the Moors. Having grown up on the edge of Dartmoor, I’ve got a deep affection for the moors. The changing scenery, wild ponies, and the sense of nostalgia make it feel like home.
While the coast is stunning, nothing beats the serenity of the moors, the seasonal colours, the flora and fauna, and the quiet expansiveness are something I’ll never tire of.
The most underrated spot in Devon is…
I’m going to give a nod to Hele Bay. It’s a hidden gem of a beach, shingle all the way. My favourite for sea glass hunting and in my opinion, has the best rock pools. It’s perfect for launching paddle boards and kayaks, it has small coves to explore when the tide’s right. The bay’s beach cafe has everything you need. An added bonus is the free parking on a Sunday.
Last year, I tried something new…
I used the Sea Sauna on Saunton Beach. It was such a unique experience, surrounded by friends and indulging in the relaxing heat while having the cold sea breeze to cool off.
The sauna has a beautiful glass-fronted window with an incredible view of the sea. If you’re after something a little different and rejuvenating, I highly recommend trying it.
This year I want to…
Take the plunge (literally!) into cold water swimming. It’s been on my radar for a while, and many of my friends are already brave enough to dip all year round. It’s totally out of my comfort zone, but I’m excited to see how it could benefit both my mental and physical health. Wish me luck! #dryrobeterritory
Oodles of inspiration for you here, so what are you waiting for? Off you go to discover it for yourself! (and if you need to, kit yourself out with a Dryrobe here.)
And do check out Charlotte’s jewellery. If you’re visiting Braunton, you’ll find it for sale in BOHO Beauty. Otherwise, take a peek at her brand, Ickle Dots over on Etsy.
