Fancy a Holiday?
Who needs actual beaches and olive groves when you can simply strike a match…
Candles are a little bit like cocktails on a night out, aren’t they? Too strong and they can ruin you; too weak and, well, what’s the point? But get one just right and you can happily go all night, until your pillow calls.
We’re huge candle lovers here at Dwell Devon, but while its often the big brands tickling the olfactory nerve, we’re stoked to discover that our new favourite has its origins much closer to home - despite the name.
Hello, Wanderlust Candle Co…
This is a Devon brand, with a wondrous array of luxury candles, melts and home fragrances carrying scents designed to transport you to far flung shores (or Scotland, if raspberry and redcurrant grabs you). Think Australia for mint, eucalyptus and cedarwood and Barbados for a hit of coconut and almond. If you’ve travelled and you’re lucky enough to go on a smelling spree across the range, it’s quite fun trying to guess the country – and surprisingly on the nose.
There’s a core collection and then limited-edition seasonal scents are released through the year. Latest additions include New Zealand (a heady blend of rock salt and driftwood) and Portugal (caramelised custard, for those of you who can’t get enough of a Pastel de Nata; frankly, who can?)
It’s an impressive range of countries that have been evocatively captured here, but when we flippantly asked if brand owner Steph has actually visited them all, it turns out she pretty much has. Having left behind a career as long-haul cabin crew, Steph returned to Plymouth and the creative hub that is Alma Yard to lay down her entrepreneurial roots.
Hats off to her for producing products that not only rival the premium names, they look really nice too. And, importantly, sustainability lies at the heart of this brand, using vegan soy wax and recyclable materials across the whole production process.
But crucially, as a migraine sufferer who loves the idea of flickering candles and floaty scents, yet very often can’t cope for much longer than an episode of White Lotus before getting on my wick, I’m particularly pleased to discover Wanderlust. While there are plenty of fragrances to choose from, there are enough gentle, subtle scents for more delicate nostrils. My faves? Ooh, I’m torn between newbie New Zealand and the lime, mango and lemongrass blend of Thailand.
At just £14 each – a snip compared to the big brands – we urge you to try one for yourself and then let us know your favourite!
