Who’s embracing those autumnal colours?

I’m a huge fan of flowers in the home. But it’s not every day that I take delivery of a nice big bouquet of blooms. I know, shocking, right? And, on the odd occasion that I do I always despair at that annoying stage when most flowers pass their best, while a few stems are still going strong. At this point, what do you do? Compost the dearly departed and leave the remainer’s looking lost in a whopping vase on their own?

It’s one of life’s little problems crying out for a solution. Until now.

Ta-daaaaaaa!

Feast your eyes on Exhibit A.

How lovely is this? It’s the work of Devon-based wizard-with-wood David Ames. Here we have a solutions-focused man, with a lifetime of experience crafting beautiful bespoke pieces, from storage to his signature ‘rocket’ stool. But these stem vases caught my eye, for being striking, yet understated and clever all at once.

Those little test tubes are perfect for when you want to gather just a few cut flowers, whether gifted or from the garden and put them in the spotlight; plus, you can continuously update a space, playing with colours and styles, depending on the seasons.

This one is so ace, I had to show you both sides. Fashioned from reclaimed timber from an old cotton mill in Kentucky, one side still features original paint, while the gorgeous wood colour takes centre stage on the other; two looks for the price of one!. David makes them in all different shapes, sizes and timbers, too, so you should be able to find the right one for your chosen spot.

Prices start at £105 for 5 stems, up to to £145 for 7 stems, including postage.

Want one? Oh, me too. Race you to his site …
