Quiet Luxury Who?

This autumn, it’s all about dopamine jewellery and the chunkiest chains. So jangle your bangles for creative maker Jodie Barruffo!

It’s happy days this Autumn; statement jewellery is making a serious comeback —think stacked bangles, pearl earrings, and charm bracelets. More is definitely more.

If you’re an avid Insta scroller, like us, you’ll know we’re spoilt for choice out there. Still, when we spotted Jodie B Jewellery’s latest pieces at a recent Native Makers Market, we knew Devon’s Queen of the Chunky Link Chain Necklace was totally having her moment.

You see? This beautiful bundle of blue stopped us in our tracks.

Which is kind of the point. Jodie Barruffo’s handmade creations are both pretty and pretty impossible to miss. As a rule, they always seem to feature big bold colours and fun patterns that can be thrown at the most mundane outfit for an instant hit of glam.

So, who IS this maker of magic?

Incredibly, Jodie has been creating jewellery on and off for nearly 20 years, which is no mean feat when you’re a maker. Her journey began with a degree in metal smithing at 18, and ten years later, her love of colour led her to explore polymer clay as a medium. For Jodie, there’s something deeply satisfying about working with polymer clay, and she’s always mindful of waste and how her pieces are crafted. She also prefers to keep her collections small, which means more attention to detail and more chance of us snaffling a piece that no-one else has!

We [chef’s kiss] the Kaleidoscope of colours that Jodie works into her pieces, each one having to pass a strict emotional test: if a colour makes her eyes happy, she’s all in! We can all get on board with that, right?

And Jodie’s love for vibrant hues and bold combo’s is also reflected in her own interest in "dopamine dressing," wearing clothes that boost the happy hormone, aka dopamine, through colour and pattern clashing. Again, we’re nodding.

Now, back to that chunky link necklace collection, one that’s become a bit of a signature for Jodie. Each link is carefully weighed, hand-rolled, and connected with a contrasting, adjustable cord. We love how versatile it is, adding glam to a simple tee, or making a statement that’ll have everyone talking at the next party.

We’re fans, we reckon you’ll be fans, and, if she needed any more endorsement, Jodie has also collaborated with the fabulously loud and proud @luinluland, adding even more flair to her creations.

But listen, if you’re more of a jewellery minimalist by nature, Jodie’s thought about you, too. You can still go massive but muted, with a monochrome version, to ease you in gently. And, if you’ve something specific in mind, Jodie also takes commissions, which is ideal too for those on the hunt for a fabulous stocking filler.

So, how do you gift yourself one of these beauties this Christmas?

Happily, Jodie will be popping up at Plymouth’s Royal William Yard Festive Good Food and Craft Markets under cosy cover of the Melville Building on 11th, 15th, 18th and 22nd December.

She’ll also be with those lovely Native Makers at their festively curated markets on 30th Nov, 1st and 14th December.

And if you’re a little further afield, catch her at the @madeinbristolgiftfair on 23 November.

Or you can seek her out on good old Etsy, by clickety clicking on the link below.

So, no excuses this season; banish the bland for a hit of happiness, coming to a body part near you, soon!
