As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisp, it’s the perfect time to slip into your favourite PJ’s, clutch a steaming mug of something warm and dive into that Netflix series you’ve been meaning to binge.  But before you settle in, let’s talk about how to transform your home into a snug-fest for the chilly months ahead.

1/ Layer Textiles

Layering is key to achieving a cosy look. Soft blankets, chunky knit throws, heavy linens and an assortment of similar toned cushions in different patterns on sofas and chairs adds depth and comfort.  Think soft wool in warm tones and smooth velvets for that perfect snuggle factor!

2/ Warm Lighting

Replace harsh overhead lights with warm, ambient lighting. Use table lamps, floor lamps and string lights to create a magical glow. Illuminating the corners of a room can also make it feel larger. Candles are a wonderful addition too; they provide both warmth and a delicious scent. Just remember to keep candles neutral when you’re eating. Nobody wants to inhale a mouthful of amber.

3/ Natural Elements

I’m a fan of bringing the outdoors in with natural materials. Pumpkins, pinecones and seasonal leaves can add warmth to your space. As Christmas approaches, incorporate them into wreaths. Houseplants can enhance the atmosphere, providing life and colour throughout the winter months. I like to plant my garden with foliage that I can easily snip and bring inside. I love eucalyptus – it’s evergreen, looks great fresh or dried and adds a lovely scent to any room.

4/ Rug It Up

A soft area rug can make a significant difference in how cosy a room feels. They’re perfect for those chilly mornings when you need a warm hug for your toes! Lay down thick, plush area rugs that feel lush underfoot. This will add warmth and comfort, especially in spaces with hard floors. They can also help define areas within larger rooms.

Visit the Nkuku lifestyle store in Totnes for ethical and sustainable options, Weaver Green in Kingsbridge for 100% recycled rugs and I recommend Danny from Home Flooring in Plymouth, which stocks bespoke rugs and runners. If you can’t see what you want, then he’ll get it made!

5/ Zoned Areas With Comfortable Seating

Designate a corner of your home as a cosy nook for reading or relaxing. A well-placed chair or chaise with a soft blanket and a small bookshelf nearby can become your new fave spot. Ottomans or poufs not only provide extra comfort but can also be handy storage for board games that you’ll definitely need at Christmas!

6/ Heated Elements

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, make it the heart of your living space. Surround the near area with logs and comfortable seating for the ultimate cosy vibe. If you don’t have the luxury of a fire, consider trying the Woodwick candle range, which crackles as it burns, mimicking the sound of a real-life fire.

7/Seasonal Scents

I simply love my NEOM wellbeing pod, accompanied with a selection of oils from The White Company to set the mood. Love their ‘Amber’ and ‘Fir Tree’ fragrance oil for winter.  Locally, Endsleigh Garden Centre in Ivybridge offer an infinite option for scenting your home, from reed diffusers to electric alternatives.

8/ Warm Colours

I’m a warm netural kinda gal, so infuse your space with warm colours through paint or decorative items. Think dark, moody accents with warm taupes, rust, dusky rose pinks and earthy browns to evoke that snug vibe.

9/ Hot Drinks Area

Create a dedicated spot for your coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Ensure your favourite mugs and supplies are within arm’s reach for those cosy nights in! Looking to treat yourself? The must-have gift for Christmas is The Velvetiser from Hotel Chocolat (which happily comes in a variety of colours to complement your interior).  Try Der Franz chai latte for the ultimate winter hug in a mug.
