Christmas Market Magic!

Your guide to Devon’s best spots for festive shopping

The scent of mulled wine in the air, a twinkling canopy of lights, Mariah Carey back on the radio– it can only mean one thing: Christmas markets are back!

Whether you’re on the hunt for something small and intimate, a full-on winter wonderland experience or even an adventure into the world of Charles Dickens, we’ve got you covered. Grab your cosiest scarf and enjoy our first sprinkling of Devon’s most magical events.

If you are planning to indulge, take a risk and switch up the wine for a mulled cider at the Cathedral Tavern, beautifully lit by fairy lights and frothing with festive entertainment. From a seasonal hog roast wrap from Kenniford Farm, a mouthwatering Barbican Bao or sampling award-winning Exeter Gin, whatever you choose, your taste buds are in for a treat!

Struggling for some last-minute stocking fillers, too? Fear not, you can expect stalls from local favourites like Alison Miles Pottery and Wild Wool for those bespoke one-offs. And whilst you explore, don't forget to peep inside the atmospheric Cathedral, decked out for the season, for the full festive experience.

When & Where: From 15th November to 15th December, Exeter Cathedral, Exeter City Centre. More information available here.

As well as the usual array of crafty gifts and delicious treats, Winter Wonderland brings the magic of Christmas alive with a plethora of attractions and activities for all ages.

For the brave at heart, or those with sturdy ankles, the ice-skating rink is your chance to nail that triple whatever-it’s-called (disclaimer: don’t blame us if it ends in tears). Afterwards, you can reward your efforts by exploring the fair ground rides, and booking in to meet Santa and his little helpers in the grotto.

Of course, if it’s more grown-up festive fun you’re after, head to the Bavarian-style bar in the Big Top Arena for a warming mug of glühwein and some live entertainment; whether it’s comedy, choir or celtic tones you’re after, it’s jolly, it’s jingly and you’ll have a very merry time!

When & Where: 15th November to 1st January, Central Park, Plymouth. More information available here

The gardens at Rosemoor are transformed into a sparkling wonderland, with twinkling lights illuminating the trees, plants, and sculptures. Wander the garden paths, basking in the glow of thousands of fairy lights, venturing through the Rock Gully, past a waterfall and into a rainbow tunnel of lights. And then, feeling zen, you can shop the festive stalls to pick up unique, nature-inspired gifts and goodies. Think artisan jams, beautifully crafted wooden decorations, and garden-inspired trinkets. It’s a perfect escape for those looking for a peaceful, yet magical, Christmas experience away from the hustle and bustle.

When & Where: From 15th November to 28th December RHS Garden Rosemoor, Torrington. Ticket and information available here.

The evening is packed with festive cheer around every corner of this historic market town. You can expect stilt walkers, choirs, candy floss stalls and even hot chestnuts roasted on steam engines.

And the shopping? Stores will stay open late, with stalls lining the streets and filling the historic Butchers Hall. From antique-inspired jewellery to artisan foods perfect for your Christmas table, there’s plenty to tick off the list here.

When & Where: 5th December Tavistock Town Centre. More information available here

So, take your pick!

And roast the chestnuts, drink the mulled wine and eat all the mince pies while you shop - happy wandering!
